Welcome to The Art of PungFu
You may be wondering at this point "What exactly is PungFu?"
- It is not an ancient martial art...but it is an approach to conflict.
- It is sometimes 2D and 3D art.
- It is more often than not written art.
- It is always a performance art.
Definition
Today, a wide variety of friends, colleagues, students, employees, and I have used the term to describe my own unique twist on the "traditional" approach to not only the martial arts, but teaching, research, supervision, student affairs, and life in general. PungFu is my personal philosophy of life and how I go about living it.
Purpose
The Art of PungFu is a means of sharing my thoughts and ideas, both professional and personal, with the world. The idea isn't to "teach" the Art of PungFu, but to help others see that learning is a lifelong journey that is meaningless unless you own it and make it yours. As you experience life, take time to reflect on what has happened, and who you are as a result. Be able to articulate your unique take on the world. Give your philosophy a name. Mine is PungFu. What is yours?
History
In 1994, I took over a martial arts class from my instructor when he had to relocate due to work. My approach to teaching martial arts is a little different than his and the students jokingly called my approach PungFu. Later, while intern teaching at Loy Norrix High School, the term once again came into common usage from a student. This time as a result of a unit I taught to my theater class on stage combat. The name has stuck and permeated all elements of my life.
